One Cup at a Time Coffee Shop

Offering members of our PEER Support Program the opportunity to gain valuable job skills, the One Cup at a Time Coffee Shop sells coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soda and pre-packaged pastries and snacks from a looby café  the Alternative Community Resource Program’s branch office at 119 Walnut St. in Johnstown.

Tables and chairs, chess and checkerboard and a small collection of books are placed around the room to encourage a welcoming, relaxed and informal atmosphere.

But as the shop’s name seems to suggest, there’s a broader purpose behind the beverages: One Cup at a Time also provides an opportunity to adults receiving treatment for a mental health diagnosis to work on social and job skills that will help them succeed in staying well.

The coffee shop is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

As part of their individual treatment plan, clients of ACRP, called “peers” , volunteer to work at the coffee shop for a few hours each week. Peers are partnered with a certified peer support specialist, a specially trained peer who works beside them to offer encouragement and assistance where needed.

Second Chance Thrift Shop

More than just a place to shop, the Second Chance Thrift shop is a store with community spirit.  Staffed by members of our PEER Support Program we are providing opportunities for our clients to gain skills and build their self-esteem.

We accept donations of clean, gently used casual, business clothing and household items.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, families can obtain brand-new children’s items donated by local stores, including Bed, Bath & Beyond, Crazy 8, Gymboree and Toys R Us at no charge.
